The research group “Perinatal Epidemiology, Environmental Health and Clinical Research” is an interdisciplinary team of 7 researchers. Its main activity focuses on identifying environmental and lifestyle factors and understanding their impact on our health and well-being contributing to the development of policies that promote a healthy and sustainable life from the prenatal stage to old age. We also study the epidemiology of infectious diseases, their management and prevention through vaccination. Another area of work focuses on evaluating emerging risks, such as microbiological risks and those associated with climate change, generating knowledge that facilitates the adaptation and preparation of the population and health systems to those emerging risks. The main methodologies used include the design of epidemiological studies, including population-based intervention and cohort studies. We have experts in characterization of exposure to environmental risks (air quality, noise, green spaces, chemical compounds), lifestyle (diet, sleep, physical activity, among other factors and social determinants). We use biomarkers to evaluate environmental exposures and the effects of oxidative stress and inflammation on health. The application of molecular biology techniques allows us to characterize gene-environment and gene-diet interactions. Recently, since the pandemic, methodologies for genetic detection of viruses and other microorganisms in environmental samples have been incorporated to characterize exposure to microbiological risks. Finally, the team has experts in statistical analysis. The research team has extensive experience leading and participating in research projects at a regional, national and international level, which allows it to maintain a network of collaborators both locally and internationally.
